Farmingdale is about 11.55 square miles in size and about 2 miles south of the capital of Augusta. A town of just under 3,000 residents, Farmingdale lies along the western bank of the Kennebec River just north of the City of Gardiner.  It is bordered by the City of Hallowell to the north and West Gardiner & Manchester to the west.

It was incorporated on April 3, 1852 and used to be a thriving river community specializing in boats, ice, bricks, and pottery. Today, Farmingdale exists largely as a strong and vibrant residential community whose residents work primarily in other cities. The distinction between the densely developed riverbanks and the open rural back-land remains.
